What’s the Difference Between a Geothermal Heat Pump and an Air-Source Heat Pump?

Where a traditional air-source heat pump draws heat from the air outside, a geothermal system extracts heat directly from the ground. This method is usually more efficient because the ground temperature below the frost line is much more consistent than winter air temps in Wisconsin—and your energy bills can reflect that efficiency.

How Long Will a Ductless Split System Last?

Just like central air conditioners, a ductless unit’s longevity depends mostly on how well you take care of it. With routine maintenance from Gross Heating, a ductless mini split system can last about 20 years.

Is a Ductless System More Efficient Than a Traditional HVAC Unit?

Yes. With traditional heating and cooling systems, about 30 percent of air is lost through a home’s ductwork. Because ductless split systems don’t need ductwork to transfer air, there is much less air lost and more to keep your family comfortable year-round.

How Do I Know When It’s Time to Replace My Heat Pump?

There are a couple of signs that will let you know it’s time: if the unit is 10 years old or older, your energy bill is spiking, or it isn’t keeping your home as warm as it should. Trust Gross Heating to help you find the perfect, energy-efficient replacement when the time comes.

What Is a Hybrid Heat Pump?

Different than a traditional air-source heat pump, hybrid systems can use either electricity or gas to heat and cool your home—this gives you the benefits of both fuel sources, including great energy efficiency.

Can a Heat Pump Replace My Furnace or Boiler?

Not completely—you’ll still need to pair it with a traditional heating system. Heat pumps are designed to work best when outdoor temperatures are in the low 30s or warmer. If the weather gets colder than that, your heat pump will switch over to a furnace or boiler to better handle the deeper freeze.

Will a Radiant Floor Heating System Damage My Floors?

No. Heated floor systems generate heat using warm water that flows through tubes under the floor, but the water never gets hot enough to do any real damage to the floor itself.
