Geothermal and Hybrid Heat—Alternative Ways to Warm Your Home

As oil prices and fuel costs continue to rise, home and business owners alike are looking for cost-effective ways to reduce energy consumption and lower their annual utility bills. Alternative systems—like geothermal and hybrid heat—may end your dependence on traditional heating or cooling equipment.

Geothermal Systems Tap Into Natural Heat

A geothermal unit uses a system of underground pipes filled with liquid to absorb heat from deep under the ground. Heat energy is then extracted by the geothermal heat pump in your home and distributed to each room through a forced-air or hydronic system. During the cooling season, the process reverses to keep you comfortable all summer long.

A geothermal pump is similar to a standard heat pump, except the geothermal unit pulls heat energy from the ground—which has a relatively stable year-round temperature of about 50 degrees—while other heat pumps draw heat energy from the air which can vary wildly depending on the season. Both are significantly more efficient than conventional heating systems because they don’t burn fuel to create warmth; they simply move existing heat from one place to another.

Hybrid Heat Combines Features and Benefits

It’s good to have options, and that’s what you get with a hybrid home comfort system from Gross Heating. Hybrid heat is a fuel-saving alternative to traditional heating and cooling systems in that it combines a gas furnace with an electric heat pump, rather than an air conditioner. It reacts to changing temperatures and activates the most efficient method to heat or cool your home. In winter, the furnace is only needed on the coldest day, when a heat pump can’t keep up. During warmer months, the heat pump takes the place of an air conditioner to keep you and your family cool. By combining the best features of both options, hybrid heat is a total, year-round solution.
